The Boys & Girls Clubs of Martin County has received the True Value Paint a Brighter Future award two consecutive years in a row. In receiving the paint, we have been able to make a positive difference in the appearance of our Club.
In 2017, at our Indiantown Club, the repainting of our Game Room provided a change from a green, non-inviting color to a vibrant blue the was more welcoming to our kids. In addition, the Game Room did show some wear and tear and the timing of the paint was perfect as it enabled us to complete a much-needed painting of the room.
This year, we utilized the paint to spruce up the gym at our Hobe Sound Club. The Club had interior painting done in the past, however, the gym has been an afterthought. Working with our teens and volunteers, we were able to get the gym up to par with the rest of the Club.
Most importantly, from a child safety perspective, having clean and bright Clubs that are well maintained tells kids that we care about them, that we welcome them and that their space is clean, bright and inviting.
The partnership was more than a “paint donation and paint job.” In 2017, the store manager was completing her degree and needed to shadow someone and do some key research on her thesis. As part of the partnership, she was able to not only spend a day with the Club’s Executive Director, she was also able to spend quality time with girls at the Club, encouraging them to follow their dreams. Her time at the Club also broke down barriers because the girls were able to see a female having success in what has been a male-dominated field. We currently have an invite to her, so she can come back and share her experiences with the girls at our Hobe Sound Club.
This partnership is key to us because it connects successful and positive adults with our members. Having someone like the store manager visit and share her work experience can help a youth explore a potential career path. Most importantly, you never know where that spark that will lead to a kid being successful will come from and it’s up to us to connect our members to positive adult role models.
